What is autism?

Autism, according to the Centers for Disease Control, is a neurodevelopmental disorder affecting families around the country and the world. Autism is characterized by a variety of factors, including poor communication, social-emotional reciprocity, and social awareness. It can also present as a rigidit in behaviors that include vocal and motor stereotypy. Because the condition is life long and often manifests in early childhood, it can be helpful for expert analysts like us at Blossoming Behavior to step in early and help both families and children with autism navigate this unique condition.

What does it mean to be neurodivergent?

Neurodiversity is exactly what it sounds like: a brain that functions a bit differently from what the general population considers neurotypical. Neurodiversity expresses itself in a variety of ways, from small tics or social quirks to diagnosable conditions including autism, dyslexia, ADHD, dyspraxia, Tourette’s Syndrome, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and more.

What is Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)?

ABA is considered one of the most effective options for treating disorders on the autism spectrum. In fact, it has even been endorsed by the US Surgeon General.

The best way to summarize ABA is that it’s a method for teaching social behaviors that help a child with autism interact with the world around them. Our goal is to reinforce productive behavior, manage challenging behavior, and teach the behaviors that will help your child function in home, school, and throughout their community. Using ABA, we’ll adjust your child’s environment to help influence or dissuade certain behaviors.

The most important thing to remember is that ABA is a guideline, and we modify those guidelines to suit your family’s needs. Check our Services to learn more.
